The Temple Mount with The Dome of the Rock

July 5, 2011

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount dominates the Jerusalem landscape. Although there are other structures with gold-plated domes, like the Church of Maria Magdalena, this structure claims your attention with its central position on the sacred higher ground. I enjoyed the mosaic- and tile-work as well as the symmetry and beautiful architecture. The capitals especially, I liked how almost each one I saw was different, yet they all seemed to come together to make a balanced structure. Mark Twain wrote that the marble was excavated from the debris left from Solomon’s destroyed Temple. In one of the pictures you can see that the marble in the columns and walls are different colors, but they all come together in lovely harmony.
I also included a picture of the Western Wall where people of the Jewish faith come to pray, as well as a lovely statuette in an archway, and another view of the Jerusalem landscape without the prominent Dome of the Rock.
