Church of the Nativity, Bethlehem

September 24, 2011

When we visited Bethlehem we had to go through a checkpoint on our way back out because Bethlehem is owned by Palestine. Therefore, we were supposed to have our passports with us, just in case the

begunned border guards stopped the tour bus and asked everyone to show them. I completely forgot mine at the hotel in Jerusalem so I was really nervous. We were told that sometimes you are held at the border and questioned for hours, even if someone gets your passport and brings it for you. It would have been a good story to tell in retrospect, but at the time was quite nerve-wracking.

The grotto of the nativity is not pictured because there wasn’t time to get a good picture with all the people visiting, but this is where many Christians believe the exact site of Christ’s birth is. There is a star encircling a depression where one can kneel and touch the manger He was born in.

Real mangers were made of stone

The entire original floor was like this
